Brides Magazine June/July 2015- Read with Me

Don't have the time or energy to find the content among all those ads in this June/July edition of Brides Magazine?  Well then, read along with me as I highlight the highs and lows of what they have to offer in this edition.

Well, 28 pages in through a majority of ads and a the table of contents, we come to this month's Question to the staff of Brides magazine.  This month's question:

Where's the most romantic place you've been?
(And let me just say this now, the staff at Brides magazine must be making a fortune because these are not your average locations for the average bride & groom to travel to for romance) Some of the answers from the staff were:
Como Shambhala Estate in Bali
Linda Vista in Costa Rica
Patricia, Italy

Le Sain Geran in Mauritius

I'm not kidding, their year end bonuses must be incredible to afford these trips.

PAGE 78- My favorite section is Ask Us Anything. I love wedding advice, especially reading the question and figuring out what advice I would give and then finding out what they say.

Most Uncomfortable Question-One of my friends keeps asking me when I'm choosing my bridesmaids.  I already have...and she's not one of them, how do I break the news?

Yikes, that's a tough one and I can honestly say I was almost at a loss for advice.  Maybe avoid her forever?  I have uncomfortable situations, especially around weddings because everyone is so emotional when it comes to the decisions you have to make.  They offered some great advice to tell her ASAP and just let her know the bridal party is small and possibly offer her a role of a reader.  Still a tough situation.

PAGE 82- Another favorite Brides Poll- This month, my favorite topic, working out/exercise.
They are saying that 4 out of 5 are working out but only 50% are dieting.  That process has to go together because all the working out in the world won't fix bad eating habits.  Trust me.

PAGE 102- The After "AFTER" Party-
A whole article on having sex on your wedding night.  While some of you may want to shy away from this topic, it really is a valuable piece of information.  More than half of my brides end up saying they didn't have the time/energy to be intimate on their wedding night.  While we all know that the days of saving yourself until marriage are long gone (for some people) this is a really special day and the night should be just as special.  You spend that entire day with SO many other people, celebrating and talking, this night is just for the two of you to come together and enjoy each other, for the first time as husband and wife.  We won't get too much into the details of everything but you will feel like you missed out if you don't make this something of value.  Just have a little talk before about trying to leave a half hour early or start sipping water towards the end of the evening and be sure to have a late night snack before you head to your room so you aren't starving!

PAGE 116- Haute Inspiration-
I have to say I'm more of a classics style girl so the idea of feathers, pleats and 3-D floral for my wedding gown just doesn't appeal to me.  Maybe for a styled shoot but not for my actual wedding day.

PAGE 141- Braid Upgrade
There is nothing more that I love for hair than a braid.  I was so excited when this style came back and LOVE seeing how much can be done with the basic braid.  Up, down and to the side, this look always comes together perfectly for most brides.  Of course, my favorite is the picture they use for the main title page of Blake Lively, stunning!

PAGE 161- 25 Ways to Personalize Your Party
I tell ALL of my clients, if you are going to spend this kind of money on your wedding day, make it all about the two of you!  Incorporate personal touches when you can without going overboard, but remember people are there to celebrate the both of you, let them know more about how you met, why you fell in love, etc...a few of the more original ones are-

#2- Do a LAST Dance- I've had a few clients do this, and really it is more for the two of you, a way to wrap it all up.  This may even help with the "after, after party" plans as well.

#21- Hand Painted Shoes- I had one bride do this for her wedding day along with her dad and they both had these amazing, personalized shoes to wear.  It was something special for them and an extra touch for the select few that pay attention to details, to appreciate.

#24- Use Personal Photos- Love having photos of the two of you growing up, dating, travelling and just being a couple.  It is so fun to see the two of you in love and again, that's why the guests are there!

Then we pass through a few articles, photos shoots, travel locations, etc...nothing that appeals to me a ton in this months edition.

Page 264- Their section of weddings they feature that are typically not your "typical" bride and groom.  This month has a Mexican model and her husband an equity manager.  Their wedding is, of course, lovely.  They, of course, had a wedding planner, yay!

Page 268- What's your TOP Priority
Wonderful article on prioritizing your marriage.  I'll take the highlight from the article to give you an idea on why it is so great-
"I've seen beautiful couples crash and burn because they gave something else priority over their relationship and proved it one small choice at a time"
That's how all relationships fall apart, one small thing at a time.  Eventually all those small things add up and start eating away at all the good things you worked so hard to have.  Don't let that be you!

Page 276- You're Invited
A Capital Affair- Stunning wedding with the most amazing color palette in DC!
Urban Oasis- A wedding held in my favorite, a clear tent!
Clear Skies in Seattle- A very brave wedding held outside without a tent?!?!

That's it for this edition of Brides magazine.  Did you read on your own?  Have different feedback?  Love different articles?  Let me know!  Read along with me next month!

Wedding Wisdom Wednesday- WWW

WWW- Decisions

When making decisions during the planning process stop and ask yourself "why?"  Why are you choosing to do things a certain way or to have certain things at your wedding.  If it is because you feel "obligated" to or because "that's the way everyone else does it" then rethink your decision.  This is your wedding and your chance to make it something unique and special to you.  Choose to do things in a way that will be fun, personal and special to your and your groom and you'll be much happier than if you do things because you "have to."

Happy Planning!

WWW- Wedding Wisdom Wednesday- End of the Night (for the guests)

Try to consider what will happen at the end of the evening.  What time do you think guests will start thinking of leaving.  What time is the DJ playing until?  Will you have a shuttle for your hotel guests?  Will you have an "after party" planned for guests who want to continue the night?  Will you provide food for the guests towards the end of the event?  Some people will bring out snacks around 10pm.  Thinking of your guests and how their night will end means that they will have a good time from start until finish.

WWW- Wedding Wisdom Wednesday- Contracts

READ YOUR CONTRACT.
I know this seems so basic but I've seen so many brides fall in love with a site, sign the contract and as the planning process moves ahead they find out they can't have the site ahead of time to decorate OR they can't hang things on the walls OR they have to be out of the site by 10pm when they wanted their wedding to last until midnight.  By that time, it is too late to do anything about it, so you end up having to accommodate the site, as opposed to the site accommodating YOU.  Read all the details, all the fine print and THEN sign.  Some places will even make changes to their contract but they will ONLY do it BEFORE you sign!

WWW- Wedding Wisdom Wednesday- End of Night

Have a game plan for the end of the night.  You aren't going to want to have to figure anything out as midnight rolls around on your wedding day so have someone that will.  Plan ahead of time where your gifts, cards, decorations and any other personal items (toasting glasses, serving utensils) are going to go.  If you don't have a planner to handle this, you'll have to designate someone responsible.  If you do this ahead of time, you'll be able to relax knowing everything is taken care of and nothing will end up lost.

WWW- Wedding Wisdom Wednesday- Timelines

Don't hesitate to give your wedding party a timeline.  Even if you don't work with a Wedding Planner, you should create a timeline for the day and give that to the people involved.  Email everyone about a week before your wedding, not too soon or they will forget about it and not too late or else they won't have had time to review the details.  This way your wedding party will know what you expect for your wedding day and where they are expected to be.  This will definitely alleviate some stress on your part and will make the day easier for everyone!

WWW or Wedding Wisdom Wednesday

One new feature to the blog will be WWW or Wedding Wisdom Wednesday.  Each Wednesday we will feature a bit of Wedding Wisdom.  This piece of advice will be from either brides, vendors or guests and will be listed as something to help make your wedding easier and your guests happier.

Today's Wedding Wisdom is-
Always inform your friends and family that you are hiring a Wedding Planner.  Make sure you let your bridal party know as well.  Explain to them what you are hiring the Planner for and what she/he will be doing and in charge of at your wedding.  This will allow for your Planner to step into your wedding party and be included and listened to, and more importantly, respected as an important part of your day.  When your closest friends and family come together they may not be welcoming or accepting of a "stranger" telling them what to do and where to go. If you give them advanced notice and explain how important your planner is, they will more than likely be just as happy to have her there as you are!

Happy Planning!

What does a "Day Of" Do?

I will follow up on this subject matter throughout the course of the blog, but I thought these were some good perspectives from, all of vendors, photographers!

Ask the Experts: What Does a Day of Coordinator Coordinate?

by Marta
Forward to a friend Love it!
Ask the Experts is your chance to get wedding advice from a panel of wedding professionals. If you have a question for our panel write asktheexperts@onewed.com.
Dear Ask the Experts,
I see a lot of articles suggesting that I get a Day of Coordinator. But, I’m a little confused about what exactly a Day of Coordinator does. What does she coordinate? I’d love to hear from some caterers/florists/photographers/musicians if they prefer it if a bride has a day of coordinator.
Thanks
Possibly Uncoordianted
Mark at VideoMagic Productions says:
Strangely enough, one of the first questions I ask my prospects when meeting with them (even before they reserve our services) is who they hired as their coordinator. Too often the response is "nobody", and I highly encourage them to consider hiring a "Day of Coordinator". The reason for this is simple. You are planning the biggest event of your entire lives and (probably) not only with no experience, but without the ability to ensure things run smoothly. When you host a party at your house, I don't imagine you mingle around like a guest. Typically a host will make sure drinks are filled, food trays don't go empty, things are organized and much more. Thus, although your wedding is different than a house party, it is MUCH bigger in scale. You want the comfort and knowledge that someone is with you throughout the entire day to ensure things run smoothly, particularly if things deviate from the original plan…and believe me, most weddings encounter issues that need to be handled. Good luck in your planning!
Rebecca Enslein of the Studio B Photography:
First off, I think the name “Day of Coordinator” is a misnomer of sorts. For anyone to have an idea of what is going on the day of your wedding, they need to be involved in the plans before that day so everything can run smoothly. They typically spend about 10-20 hours before the wedding day getting all the necessary information together like getting in touch with the other vendors, visiting the venue, and speaking with you about your vision for the day. The day of coordinator is basically there to make sure that you don’t have to worry about a thing when your wedding day rolls around. There are so many behind the scene things that have to happen to prepare for a wedding like accepting delivery of the cake, setting up all the chairs for the ceremony, setting the tables for the reception, helping the florist with decorations, etc. that if you had to do them on your own, you’d never have the time to get ready!
As a photographer, I LOVE to work with brides who have coordinators. We both like to keep things running on schedule, and when the bride isn’t stressed about all the tiny details, she’s able to be much more relaxed and that makes for better pictures. If you are getting married somewhere that has a person that acts like a coordinator (for example, country clubs usually have very helpful and able staff in this department) you might not have to hire an outside person to handle things. However, if you are getting married in a park or another location that doesn’t traditionally do weddings, you’re better off hiring a coordinator to make sure everything goes according to plan.

Check out MY interview here!

After interviewing vendors throughout my blog, I was thrilled to be able to answer some interview questions myself.
Check out my interview here.  Let me know your thoughts and feedback on my answers.  I'm definitely interested in what other planners have to say and what their answers might have been.
